The method involves calculating exhaust gas recirculation flow based on data such as air flow measured by a flow meter (31), upstream temperature of an intake valve (41), downstream pressure of the intake valve, pressure in an intake manifold (5a), exhaust gas recirculation temperature in an outlet of by-pass conduit (8), and passage section at the level of the intake valve. Upstream pressure of the intake valve is calculated, and exhaust gas recirculation rate is estimated from a mixture of air and recycled gas supplied to an engine (1). An independent claim is also included for a system for controlling exhaust gas recirculation rate on a diesel engine of a motor vehicle.
