The method involves calculating exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) rate of an internal combustion engine i.e. oil engine, by an electronic control unit (9). The rate is calculated according to flow of ambient fresh air (AF) measured by a flowmeter, temperature in upstream of a swirl actuator butterfly valve (51a) and a EGR valve (51b), pressure in downstream of the valve (51b), pressure in an intake manifold (5a) in downstream of the valve (51a), temperature of EGR gas in by-pass conduit's outlet, and equivalent section of the valve (51b). The pressures are measured using piezoelectric sensors. An independent claim is also included for a system for estimating exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) rate of an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle.
