Extraction of an Astragalus extract for the treatment of Hepatitis C

A herb Astragalus extract, or an active fraction thereof is suitable for use in the treatment of Hepatitis C. The extract or active fraction thereof may form part of a medicament or a food or dietary additive. The extract is preferably purified by a factor of ten with respect to the dried raw material and preferably it comprises at least one marker selected from the group of: Astragaloside I, formononetin-7-o- b -d-glucoside and 3'-hydroxyl-formononetin-7-o- b -d-glucoside. The extract is preferably for administering in conjunction with interferon and/or Ribavirin. A method of producing an extract of Astragalus, with said extract comprising at least one marker selected from the group of Astragaloside I, formononetin-7-o- b -d-glucoside and 3'-hydroxyl-formononetin-7-o- b -d-glucoside, comprises at least one alcoholic extraction (preferably with ethanol), at least one ethanol-water precipitation step and a systematic solvent fractionation step with a plurality of solvents of different polarity.
