PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a silica gel capable of being used in a neutral region and not also obstructing the separation of an acidic substance along with a basic substance, a chromatograph apparatus using the silica gel, a separation method for separating the basic substance using the chromatograph apparatus and a manufacturing method of the silica gel. PSOLUTION: The silica gel is characterized in that its surface is modified by an alcoholic hydroxyl group and used as a stationary phase in chromatography. The modification by the alcoholic hydroxyl group is performed by either one of a method (a) for bonding a compound, which is equipped with an epoxy group and the functional group bondable to the silica gel, to the surface of the silica gel by the functional group bondable to the silica gel and subsequently hydrolyzing the epoxy group to convert it to the alcoholic hydroxyl group and a method (b) for bonding a compound equipped with the alcoholic hydroxyl group and the functional group bondable to the silica gel to the surface of the silica gel by the functional group bondable to the silica gel.
