PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To upgrade a USB device limited in capability, by a simple mechanism. PSOLUTION: A personal computer 10 acquires hub identification information and device identification information corresponding to a USB standard, from a USB hub 30 and a scanner 50 connected to the USB hub 30. An upgrade command is transmitted to the scanner 50, when a combination of the acquired hub identification information and device identification information coincides with a combination stored in advance in a HDD 18. The USB hub 30 and the scanner 50 are only required to conform to the USB standard for communication as conventional ones. A USB hub having a plurality of downstream ports is not to be upgraded, because the combination of the hub identification information and the device identification information stored in the HDD 18 includes hub identification information for identifying the USB hub 30 having one upstream port 32 and one downstream port 34.
