A bidirectional communication system for use with a restrictive opening device (28) implanted within a patient, the system comprising: a. sensor means (84) for measuring the fluid pressure within the restrictive opening device (28); b. means (114) to communicate pressure measurements of fluid from the sensor means (84) to an external local unit (60) to the patient; c. a base unit (170) located in a remote location of the patient, including the base unit (170) means for evaluating user interface measurements fluid pressure; d. a communication link between receiver units and base (60, 170) to transmit data between units, including transmitted data measurements fluid pressure; and characterized in that: the base unit (170) includes means for determining the size of a stoma formed by the restrictive opening device (28).
