An on-demand water heater and a method of operating the same is provided, thewaterheater including an electrolytic heating subsystem (103). The electrolyticheating subsystem is a pulsedelectrolysis system that heats a heat transfer medium contained within acirculation conduit (121). Asthe heat transfer medium is circulated through the conduit, it heats anintegrated heating element (107).When water passes through the on-demand water heater, in response to userdemand, the water passesthrough a heat exchange conduit (111) integrated within the water pipe(109/113) and positioned in closeproximity to the heating element (107). As the water passes through the heatexchange conduit, itbecomes heated (111). In at least one embodiment, the system is configured toallow cold water to bemixed with the hot water, thus providing an additional level of temperaturecontrol.
