A method for treating or preventing a hostmammal that exhibits aversive signs and symptoms presentduring protracted abstinence or extended discontinuationsyndromes as seen after cessation of compulsive activity,behaviors, or substance use is disclosed. That methodcomprises administering to a host mammal in need apharmaceutical composition containing an aversive signand symptom lessening amount a compound of FormulaI or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof dissolvedor dispersed in a physiologically acceptable diluent, andrepeating the administration as needed, wherein W, X, Y andZ, R1 and Ar are defined within. Data are provided in ratsas host mammals using behavioral models dependent on theCRFi system: defensive burying, alcohol dependence, cocainedependence and nicotine dependence. A contemplated methodalso is useful for inhibiting relapse of such a behavior. Acontemplated method also is useful for treating substance-related or substance- induced psychiatric disorders thatinclude aversive signs and symptoms.
