The present invention relates generallyto photovoltaic devices, and more particularlyto photovoltaic roofing products in which a photovoltaicelement is joined to a roofing substrate. Inone embodiment, the present invention provides aphotovoltaic roofing element comprising a roofingsubstrate; one or more photovoltaic cells disposedon the roofing substrate; and a colored or patternedlayer disposed on the roofing substrate and visiblein the area surrounding the photovoltaic cells; andan encapsulant layer disposed over the photovoltaiccells and the patterned colored layer.
