This invention relates to devices, systems and methods for deliveringpreprogrammed quantities of an active ingredient to a biological system overtime without the need for external power or electronics. In particular, theinvention provides compositions and devices comprising: a silicon dioxidematerial obtained by heating porous silicon at a temperature above400°C inan oxidizing environment comprising a plurality of pores; and a drug or anactive ingredient within the pores. Also provided arepharmaceuticalcompositions comprising the compositions, uses thereof for treatment of adisease or disorder of the eye and methods of production.
