Speed and head way control device has functionality of a standard operational mode (20). A monitoring device (32) is provided for monitoring condition of brake system (16) wherein a switching device (30) for switching between the standard operational mode and conditional operating mode, for milder operating mode (22, 24, 26, 28) of the brake system as a function of the result of the monitoring.
