The device (1) has a fuel gas operateable fireplace (3) arranged in a lockable or closed combustion chamber (35). The fireplace is provided with a burner base nozzle (49) of a flame barrier for heating the combustion chamber by ignited fuel gas. The burner base nozzle is arranged such that spreading of the flame is restricted by the flame barrier based on ignition at the burner base nozzle. The flame barrier is formed by a gas permeable steel grating (17) for hardly inflammable or pyrolizable material i.e. lava stone (21). An independent claim is also included for a method for simulating a defined combustion situation i.e. flash-over-combustion situation, with sudden flame propagation in a closable or closed combustion chamber.
