A shadow processing apparatus based on an image space using an adaptive traversal technique and a method thereof are provided to solve the long processing time, much calculation amount and the performance deterioration of the whole system caused by the use of a big memory, when processing the shadow. A ZWSU(z-buffer walking shadowing unit) determines a direction for searching a pixel on a Z- buffer(401), and then calculates the location of the pixel to be checked for the existence of a shadow(403). The ZWSU calculates the depth value of the corresponding pixel in a viewpoint of the light(405), and then determines whether the shadow exists by comparing the calculated depth value with the previous maximum depth value(407). The ZWSU calculates the color value of the final pixel, to which shadow information is added, for the color value of a pixel from a frame buffer(409), and then provides the calculated color to the frame buffer.
