An improvement of field emission characteristic of carbon nanotubes are provided to make the length distribution of the carbon nanotube uniform and to extend the use life of the carbon nanotube. The improvement of field emission characteristic of carbon nanotubes comprises the electrically oxidative treatment. The electrically oxidative treatment is performed in the oxidizing gas atmosphere. The oxidizing gas is oxygen or ozone. The electrically oxidative treatment is performed in the predetermined voltage mode and fixed electric current mode.
