A cosmetic composition for skin whitening is provided to improve the inhibition for the generation of melanin and to enhance the whitening effect of the skin. A cosmetic composition for skin whitening contains a phenolic compound separated from Phragmitis Rhizoma as an active ingredient. Preferably the phenolic compound is at least one compound selected from the group consisting of methyl gallate, rho-hydroxy cinnamic acid, (+)-lyoniresinol, and (+)-lyoniresinol-3alpha-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside.
