The device has a display device (1) and a lock-down switch (10) and key switches (20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 85, 90, 95) for selecting functions that are displayed by the display device. A control device (3) controls a display of the display device. The operating units are attached to colored illumination units, respectively. The control device controls the display device such that one function displayed by the display device belonging to one of the switches is assigned to a display color, which corresponds to a color assigned to the associated switches. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a multi-functional operating device.
