The emission control system (100) has a particle filter (104), a nitrogen oxide absorber unit and a catalyst (107) for the catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxide. More particles are found in a volume element (V1) of exhaust gas upstream of filter, than that found in a volume element (V2) of the exhaust gas downstream the catalyst. The particles are converted to condensed polyhalogen aromatic compound in the volume element and the volume element is free of condensed polyhalogen aromatic compound. Oxidation catalyst (103) comprises metallic platinum or palladium or a mixture of both. An independent claim is also included for a method for checking the content of nitrogen oxide soot particles and polyhalogen aromatic compound in exhaust gases of diesel engines.
