The method involves stirring a liquid i.e. emulsion paint, by a machine, and detecting an agitating resistance to be overcome when stirring the liquid to determine consistency i.e. viscosity, suitable for processing of the liquid. The agitating resistance to be detected is balanced against an agitating resistance corresponding to working consistency, where the agitating resistance is detected as actuating force, torque and lifting force. A degree of deviation of consistency is displayed and/or the deviation is corrected by changing the consistency. An independent claim is also included for a device for determining a consistency of a liquid.
