The method involves determining two of following evaluation variables such as throttle flap angle, engine speed, temporal derivative of the engine speed and temporal deviation of the throttle flap angle. A probability characteristic value is determined from the evaluation variables. The probability characteristic value represents a measure for a probability that present a starting process. A starting of a motor vehicle i.e. motorcycle, is recognized, when the probability characteristic value exceeds a given threshold value. An independent claim is also included for a device for detecting an initiation of a starting process of a motor vehicle in particular a motor cycle by a driver.
