The variable is correlated with a characteristic (16) of a user (3), and action is performed depending on the detected variable. An image signal of a camera (15) is recognized as the variable. An image (7) of the user is provided by the camera. An audio signal (9) from a region of a back seat of the vehicle is recognized as the variable. An independent claim is also included for a motor vehicle comprising a detection device for detecting a variable in a motor vehicle.
