The invention relates to a method and a device for the treatment of wastewater with high nitrogen and low BOD5 content, in particular landfill water. In this process, the wastewater is mixed in a first stage with a nitrifying activated sludge and the ammonium contained in the wastewater is only partially oxidized to nitrite. nitrite and ammonium contained in the aqueous phase are converted to molecular nitrogen in one or more activated carbon fixed bed reactors with exclusion of oxygen. In the apparatus used for this purpose, a membrane filter is arranged between an aerobically operated activated sludge container and at least one or more activated carbon fixed bed reactors connected in series.
