The steering system has a steering wheel (S) connected with steerable vehicle wheels (R). A damping unit i.e. thyristor, damps an electrical steering actuator unit (1) i.e. three-phase electric motor, for steering assistance, where the damping unit is controlled by a controlling unit. The damping unit is controlled such that two electrical phases of the electrical steering actuator unit are electrically coupled. The steering wheel and the steerable vehicle wheels are permanently connected in a mechanical or hydraulic manner.
