The device (2) has an inclination sensor (3) detecting a longitudinal-inclination angle of a motor vehicle (1) and an acceleration sensor (4) detecting a starting acceleration of the vehicle. A moment sensor (5) detects a drive moment at a drive device (6) and evaluation and signaling devices (8) determine a characteristic value from the measured angle, starting acceleration and the drive moment. The evaluation- and signaling devices determine whether the vehicle drives in a higher gear based on a characteristic diagram and transmit a warning signal when the vehicle does not drive in the gear. An independent claim is also included for a method for monitoring of a starting process of a vehicle.
