Producing biodiesel comprises: (a) transesterifying triglycerides with methanol; (b) separating the obtained biodiesel and glycerin; (c) reacting a portion of the glycerin to 1-hydroxyacetone or acetone; (d) reacting a portion of the glycerin with the 1-hydroxyacetone or acetone to obtain (2-methyl-[1,3]dioxolan-4-yl)-methanol compound (I); and adding the obtained (I) to the biodiesel. Producing biodiesel comprises: (a) transesterifying triglycerides with methanol; (b) separating the obtained biodiesel and glycerin; (c) reacting a portion of the glycerin to 1-hydroxyacetone or acetone; (d) reacting a portion of the glycerin with the 1-hydroxyacetone or acetone to obtain (2-methyl-[1,3]dioxolan-4-yl)-methanol compound of the formula (I); and adding the obtained (I) to the biodiesel. Independent claims are included for: (1) the biodiesel produced by the above process; and (2) producing (I) comprising reacting glycerin with acetone or 1-hydroxyacetone in a heterogeneous catalyzed reaction, where the catalyst is an inorganic-organic composite material.
