The method involves guiding sewing threads (23) from a thread bobbin to a stitch needle. Shuttles (17) are displaced in guide paths. Rear threads delivered from a bobbin are guided through a loop (25) of the sewing threads by the shuttles during stitch formation. The sewing threads are folded by a return stroke of the stitch needle. A loop shaper (29) is engaged in the loop during formation of the loop of the sewing threads. The loop is held open for passage of the shuttles and the stitching needle is withdrawn when the shaper is in engagement with the loop. An independent claim is also included for a device for performing a method for operating a shuttle machine.
