The system has a measuring device (11) comprising an acceleration sensor (12) e.g. micromechanical acceleration sensor, which is attached to a machine element (10) or a protective construction. The machine element is formed as a roller (13) or a cylinder (14) of a material web manufacturing machine, and the acceleration sensor comprises a monitoring axis, which runs along a tangential or radial direction of the machine element. The measuring device has a processing unit for processing information provided by the sensor. An independent claim is also included for a method for positioning a machine element.
