The device has a roof rack (3) arranged on a vehicle roof (1.1), and a roof load (2) i.e. roof box (2.1), arranged on the roof rack, where driving status data is sequentially detected by detection units and supplied to a control unit. The roof load and/or the roof rack are positioned by an actuating element e.g. gear wheel drive, depending on the detected driving status data when the status data reaches and/or exceeds a longitudinal speed threshold value. The actuating element is arranged and/or integrated in the roof load or in the roof rack. An independent claim is also included for a method for assisting driving characteristics of a vehicle.
