The method involves depositing characteristic maps (K1 to Kn) of road handling program (V1) by a control unit (2). An earlier interference of the program is adjusted by detected roof load. The maps of respective parameterizable and actively adjustable unit such as program, air cushioning (V2), damping (V3), steering element (V4), anti-roll control (V5), suspension system (V6), motor control (V7), are deposited for influencing driving characteristics of the vehicle. The driving characteristics are controlled and regulated by the detected roof load based on the maps. An independent claim is also included for a device for operating a vehicle.
