The method involves detecting a driver acceleration request, and detecting adjustable vehicle speed based on the detected driver acceleration request. A driving motor of a vehicle is operated with a characteristic for executing an acceleration process on the vehicle speed. The driver acceleration request and the vehicle speed resulting are predetermined by a position (P) of an accelerator pedal (1). A vehicle velocity value is assigned to the position of accelerator pedal along a variable pedal travel. The adjusted vehicle velocity value is optically represented by a display unit (4). An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling a vehicle.
