The carrier has a carrying structure (13) for carrying a load (34), which protrudes into a working position of the carrier backwardly from a rear region (11) of a motor vehicle (12). A carrying arrangement (19) is provided for applying the load relative to the carrier structure. The arrangement is movable between a driving position, which is provided for driving operation of the vehicle, and a loading position (L), which is provided for loading the vehicle. The arrangement with the load in the loading position releases a pivoting region (21) of a rear flap (22) or a rear door of the vehicle.
