The method involves dividing a non-volatile, re-writable memory (1) into memory areas (1.0-1.n), and assigning the memory areas to respective hardware-status registers (2.0-2.n). An actual status of each memory area is stored in the respective hardware-status register, where the actual status signals whether the memory area is erased or not. The status is updated through a hardware of a memory chip when the respective memory area is erased, where the memory areas are physically interrelated memory areas. An independent claim is also included for a device for managing a non-volatile, re-writable memory.
