The system has a node corresponding to a delivering point and another node corresponding to a sorting point, where a well defined identification characteristic value is assigned to the nodes. The identification characteristic value of the latter node is assigned to the former node, where the latter node precedes or follows the former node in a transport route of a postal item. The transmission characteristic that has the postal item addressed to the sorting point is assigned to the node that is assigned to the delivering point. An independent claim is also included for a method of determining a transport route of a postal item within a mail distribution network.
