The method involves selecting a function to quantify spatial coherence of a reconstructed volume of an object, and selecting another function to quantify difference between sectional images of the object and corresponding sections of the reconstructed volume. Global cost function whose value depends on the quantification functions is selected. Positioning and/or orientation of the sections are estimated by minimizing the global cost function. Decomposition coefficients of the images of the object are estimated based on the quantification functions and the global cost function. An independent claim is also included for a device for reconstructing a volume of a three-dimensional object from a sequence of sectional images of the object.
