The spanner can be used to tighten or loosen a nut which may be connected to a pipe 1. The pipe may be located in a confined space such as on a bath or basin tap. Jaws 3 on the spanner firmly grip the nut with encapsulating lips 11. The jaws are also locked onto the nut by means of a serrated locking button 6 and boss 12. The main body 2 of the spanner is positioned to encapsulate the pipe. The jaws 3 may be movable via a spindle 4, a rack 13 and a pinion 8. The locking button may be drawn away from the boss against a spring 5 to allow the jaws to be opened or closed. The body of the tool may further include a handle 9 for extra torque, and a light source 10 to illuminate the work area.
