PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an operation mode switch control device and an operation mode switch control method for the engine capable of expanding the operation range of the compression ignition mode, in particular, in a low load range, in an engine where the compression ignition operation mode and the spark ignition operation mode are switched according to an operation state. PSOLUTION: The operation mode switch control device for an engine switching the spark ignition operation mode and the compression ignition operation mode according to the operation state includes a cylinder inner flow control means (S7, S8) wherein the inner flow of the cylinder is reduced when the spark ignition operation mode is switched to the compression ignition operation mode, and the inner flow of the cylinder is increased when the compression ignition operation mode is switched to the spark ignition operation mode during low load operation.
