PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To acquire highly precise results of measurement on the size of defects in a short period of time and clearly distinguish originally present flaws from cracks which have occurred in the passage of time.;SOLUTION: This automatic ultrasonic flaw detection apparatus is provided with: an acoustic velocity /distance measuring means for measuring both the actual acoustic velocity of ultrasonic waves propagating through a thick-walled structure material and the distance to a reflector on the basis of the waveforms of transmitted ultrasonic waves and the waveforms of reflected echoes; a noise removal means for reducing noise intensity and enhancing defect signals instead by signal processing when nose due to shape echoes and backscattering waves has conspicuously appeared in received waveforms; a crystal grain evaluation means for evaluating the size of a plurality of types of crystal grains in the material and selecting an optimum a flaw detection frequency for the crystal grains on the basis of evaluation results; and an ultrasonic propagation property prediction means for analyzing and visualizing wave propagation when the behavior of wave propagation of ultrasonic waves is complicated, and for predicting the ultrasonic propagation properties of the material having coarse crystals.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
