The invention relates to an industrial production of diol from a cyclic carbonate and an aliphatic monohydric alcohol continuously into a continuous multi-stage distillation column (C) a stripping section having a length L(cm), an inside diameter D(cm) and an internal with a number of stages nthereinside, and an enrichment section having a length L(cm), an inside diameter D(cm) and an internal with a number of stages nthereinside, wherein L, D, n, L, D, and nsatisfy the following formulae: 300L3000; 50D700; 3L/D30; 3n30; 1000L5000; 50D500; 10L/D50; 20n100 and DD; the enrichment section has at least one chimney tray installed therein as an internal, said chimney tray having installed therein one or more chimneys each having an opening having a cross-sectional area S (cm) satisfying the formula 200 S1000 and each of the chimneys being such that a height h (cm) from said opening of said chimney to a gas outlet of said chimney satisfies the formula 10h80. There also described a continuous multi-stage distillation column C for separating diol from a high-boiling reaction mixture used for carrying out said process.
