A bipolar surgical instrument, comprising a chassis (15) having a longitudinal axis (A) disposed therethrough, and an extension (17) extending from the chassis having a first end effector (22) attached thereto, the first effector including a first electrode (26). A tube (19) is disposed within the chassis having a second end effector (21) attached thereto, the second end effector including a second electrode (20). The second end effector is movable relative to the chassis and the first end effector by a mechanical activator (32) along the longitudinal axis to engage tissue between the first and second electrodes. A sensor (31) for measuring the impedance between the first and second electrodes is provided.
