The method involves determining a suction pipe pressure ratio based on an accelerator position (PV). A reference value of a throttle flap pressure ratio is assigned to a maximum reference value of the flap ratio when the pipe ratio is larger than a preset threshold value. A reference value of a circulating air flap pressure ratio is assigned to a maximum reference value of the air flap ratio when the pipe ratio is smaller than the threshold value. Throttle and circulating air flaps (THR, RFP) are controlled based on the reference values of the flap pressure ratios, respectively. An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling a throttle flap and a circulating air flap in an intake system of an internal combustion engine.
