The device (1) has a transverse conveyer device (2) comprising a transverse conveyor (21) for receiving fish (9). A conveying unit (22) is arranged downstream to the transverse conveyor. The conveyer device is designed such that each fish leaves the transverse conveyor at front end and falls down in a downward free area (11) under force of gravity and reaches uniform belly/back alignment at the conveying unit. A catching unit (32) of a turning device (3) temporarily holds a fish (92) to be turned. The turning device turns the fish when the fish leaves the transverse conveyor.
