In an electrochemical process to form a layer (15) of material incorporating carbon nanotubes (CNT) based on a substrate (14), nanotubes (13) are dispersed in an ionic fluid (12). Electrical current is applied to an electrode (16) and the substrate. In a further embodiment the nanotubes are deposited without the use of an electric current.
