The method involves checking whether speed of a motor vehicle falls below a predetermined maximum speed. A pressure-reduction cycle is executed, if the speed of the vehicle falls below the maximum speed. The pressure-reduction cycle is executed by controllably reducing brake pressure acting on a wheel of the vehicle to a predetermined value to reduce a wheel slip. The cycle is accomplished when a driver brake request given by a driver exceeds a minimum value. The maximum speed is selected such that it is smaller than a lower critical speed for a brake system of the vehicle. An independent claim is also included for a controller for implementing a brake system operating method.
