The system has an object detection device for detecting objects in a driving direction before a vehicle in a traffic lane. A control device increases a minimum triggering level of a protection system e.g. passenger protection system, if the detection device detects a traversable obstacle e.g. road kerb and manhole cover. The detection device transmits and receives laser radiation, radar radiation and ultra shell radiation. The detection device is designed on a basis of a camera system for distance measurement. An independent claim is also included for a method for activating a passenger protection system in a vehicle.
