The turbocharger has a magnetic bearing arrangement comprising an axial-bearing arrangement for supporting a rotor shaft (16). An axial force detection device determines axial force (Faxiallager) engaged at the shaft. A position predetermining device predetermines reference-position of the shaft. Position detection devices determine actual position of the shaft. A controlling-device controls the magnetic bearing arrangement, such that the shaft is moved to the pre-determined reference position when the actual position of the shaft deviates from the reference position. An independent claim is also included for a method for regulating axial position of a rotor shaft of a turbocharger.
