PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a learning device for a control shaft rotation angle position sensor output reference position in a variable valve device of an internal combustion engine capable of accurately learning a sensor output reference position of a potentiometer with considering conditions of an engine after mounting the potentiometer, correcting fluctuation of the sensor output reference position from sensor output reference position variation of potentiometer mounting error and aging effect after mounting the potentiometer, and always correcting variation and change of exhaust gas, fuel consumption and output performance of each engine. ;SOLUTION: This device is provided with a self-shut state learning means which controls rotation of a control shaft 2 down to a target minimum rotation angle position predetermined by a minimum lift side stopper 8 when an operation determination means (Step 201) determines that the engine is in a self-shut state after an operation stop and learns an actual rotation angles θ position of the potentiometer 3 at that time as a sensor output reference position and stores the learned value in a storage means backup RAM.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
