The turbocharger (10) has a rotor shaft (12) comprising a magnetic bearing arrangement with an axial bearing device with a pole. The rotor shaft is positioned such that a gravitational force of the rotor shaft and/or rotors works against a magnetic force of the magnetic bearing arrangement. The rotor shaft is positioned such that a compressor wheel (18) of a compressor (20) of the turbocharger is arranged below the rotor shaft. A turbine wheel (14) of a turbine (16) of the turbocharger is arranged above the rotor shaft. The compressor wheel is larger than the turbine wheel. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a turbocharger.
