The device has a control and regulating unit (10a) that is adjustable between a control adjustment mode and a regulating adjustment mode depending on operating parameter for adjusting an actual phase position (11a) of a shaft i.e. cam shaft, to a target phase position (12a). The control and regulating unit is adjustable to a normal operating mode between the control adjustment mode and the regulating adjustment mode. The control and regulating unit stops the shaft at maximum adjustment speed in the control adjustment mode. An independent claim is also included for a method for adjusting a phase position of a shaft.
