The device (1) has a comminution motor (20) supporting a comminution tool at a circumference of the motor. A rotary encoder (42) determines a rotary position of a rotor (41) of an electric motor (40). A sensor device determines a rotary position of the former motor. The sensor device has an output to output a sensor signal, where the output is connected with an input of a controller (60) i.e. switching power supply controller. Information about the rotary position of the rotor and the comminution motor are processed in the controller, which controls a drive device based on the information. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a comminution device i.e. drum hacker.
