The invention relates to a system (1) for coating, in particular painting, objects, in particular vehicle bodies, which in a known manner has a coating booth (2) in which the articles can be exposed to coating material. Through the coating booth (2), an air flow is passed, which receives and dissipates overspray particles of the coating material. This air flow is led to an inlet opening (15) of an electrostatically operating separation device (14) which is located on the underside of the separation device (14). From the air flowing upwards in the separation device (14), overspray particles are deposited on at least one deposition electrode (25) in the electric field to at least one counter-electrode device (26). The cleaned air exits the separation device (14) via an outlet opening (16) arranged on its upper side. The nature of the air flow in the separator (14) from bottom to top protects sensitive internal components of the separator (14). The strongest deposition takes place in the lower region of the deposition electrode (14), so that with the upward movement of the air progressively cleaner air interacts with increasingly cleaner regions of the deposition electrode (25, 40).
