The method involves determining adjustment variables by a variable representing a front axle load of a vehicle. A computation instruction is held in a steering element (1) of the vehicle. The determined adjustment variables are utilized to determine steering force support and/or resetting of steering element depending on actual operating parameters of the vehicle and given algorithms for automatically adjusting steering characteristic to the front axle load by appropriately controlling an electric motor (9). An independent claim is also included for an electromechanical steering comprising an electric motor.
